    Shirley A. Murphy, 96, of Skaneateles passed away peacefully Sunday, October 23rd with her family by her side. Shirley was a communicant of St. Mary’s of the Lake. She also was an avid reader and enjoyed gardening, flowers, jigsaw puzzles and the daily jumble. This was the first year she couldn’t bowl because of her health.
    Shirley loved her bowling league and fellow bowlers. She also enjoyed her sports teams, the Yankees, the Bills and SU football and basketball. Go SU.
    Shirley was predeceased by her husband, Robert Sr., her son, Robert Jr., and her siblings. She is survived by her daughter, Ann Massey and son, David (Marilyn), daughter-in-law, Judy, grandson, Robert C. III (JoAnn), granddaughter and caregiver, Michelle (Brad) Townsend, great grandsons, Robert D. and Zachary, great granddaughters, Reese and Riley and many nieces and nephews.
    The family wants to thank all of Shirley’s neighbors, especially Bob Sykes, and many thanks to all of the caregivers.
    Funeral services with a gathering to follow, will be held on Monday, October 31st at 10am at St. Mary’s of Lake, Skaneateles. Burial will be private.
    In lieu of flowers, donations in Shirley’s memory may be made to the Humane Society of CNY; 4915 1/2 W Taft Rd, Liverpool, NY 13088 or SAVES; 77 Fennell St, Skaneateles, NY 13152 ·

I am so saddened by our loss of my good friend Shirley. We have bowled together for over 44 years and she taught me so much. I truly love her and will always appreciate and treasure our strong friendship.

Some of my thoughts and memories of Shirley Murphy.

There is much more than I can convey here. So this is an Unfinished Symphony. To be continued later.

When I first moved to Foster Road in December 1965 I almost immediately got to know the Murphy brothers Bob and Bud. And their families and all the kin folks, neighbors and a whole interconnected fellowship of very sociable and friendly people. There were neighborhood picnics in the woods, extended family reunions, holiday celebrations, hayrides, you name it.
Shirley Murphy was one of the most central characters of these events, along with her husband Bob and many more. Bob just thrived on these things, and was quite Instrumental in getting Shirley to be a prime hostess. Many large Murphy extended family picnics in their backyard, with ample supplies of appropriate beverages and food.
Shirley was always right there, a very hard and willing worker.
Shirley just loved to see everyone have so much fun, especially the the kids and young folk. She was certainly a people person and everybody loved her.
So many memories of those early years. Riding snowmobiles all over the backwoods, to Mud Lake, the Camillus Country Club, the Gorge (Andy Waters') Inn, and all over. Shirley would sit behind Bob (mostly we would ride double with the wives on the back).
Those special Saturday evenings the neighbors went to Maple Grove Inn in West Monroe north of Oneida Lake to hear host Dwayne Wilson sing country music with guest artists, Kitty Wells, Kenny Roberts, Tommy Cash. Shirley loved the old time country music. This is not a short story. Needs to be continued, maybe in a documentary of the future - ----
Shirley was just a very special person in my life. She was kinda like having a second mother at times. We had so many conversations over a lot of years.
A song by the Statler Brothers comes to my mind often: The Official Historian on Shirley Jean Berrell.
I feel like I'm just that regarding Shirley Murphy.

I remember many wonderful trips to Foster Road and the Murphy and Kinney residences when I was a kid. Horseshoes, running around Shirley/Bob and Bud/Evelyn houses and lots. I knew Shirley (Sid) from when I was 5 years old. Shirley and Bob babysat me in Courtland, NY. Shirley and I were good friends. My deepest condolences on Shirley's passing. I have so many fond memories of our family reunions hosted by Shirley and Bob and spending time with all of our aunts, uncles and cousins.

Although I haven't been able to visit in a few years, the last time I saw Shirley she was as loving, kind and incredible as always.

My condolences to the entire Murphy family, Shirley was one of the nicest people I've ever known. I was a next-door-neighbor kid who spent a LOT of time at Shirley's house, playing with Ann and the cousins. She was always so good to me, and so patient with the constant traffic of kids going in and out! I will remember Shirley always as a pretty, kind woman who made Halloween fudge that was out of this world. Heaven is getting an amazing angel.
