Mike most recently worked as the building superintendent at the State Tower building in Syracuse, retiring after 25 years. Mike loved to play golf, belonging to 2 leagues and Treasurer of one. Mike was proud of his 50-year membership of both the Cortlandville Masonic Lodge #470 and the Local 267 Plumbers & Steamfitters union.
Predeceased by his sister, Elaine Stout, and his grandson, Joshua Cates, he is survived by his wife of 40 years, Ruth, and by his children, Kandi (Dan) Horst, Brian (Stacy) and Annette Cates, Christopher Searle, 5 grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, one cousin and many friends.

To the family, sorry for your loss. We were kids together in Mattydale. I probably haven’t seen Mike in 60 years. He brings back many, many good memories, and names. Baseball in the street and football on the median of route 11. Along with Jim McBride, there was Jerry Coe, Gene Vodak, John Myslinski, Butch Scherer, and others whose names escape me. RIP Mike.

I worked with Mike at Bon Air starting in 1970 while serving my apprenticeship. Mike was a very hard worker and well respected. Mike and I did the last job Bon Air was obligated to complete at Nine Mile 2. Bon Air had folded so shortly after Mike went with the State Tower and I went to Burns Bro’s.

The last time I saw Mike was when he came to the union hall to vote for my son Greg who was running for Business Manager, 12 years ago.

I’m sorry to miss the service as I am presently being treated at Dana Farber in Boston but my condolences go out to his family. Mike was a great guy!
