Judith (Judy) Moore McGinn passed away on Friday, August 11, 2023 at her home in Skaneateles, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on April 20, 1951 in Erwin, North Carolina, Judy spent her early years on the family farm in Fayetteville, North Carolina. The family later moved to Maryland, just outside Washington, D.C. Judy graduated from school for court reporting. She began her career in several county and federal locations before taking a position as a court reporter for the United States House of Representatives. Judy met her husband, Michael, at this time.
In 1984 Judy and Michael began their great adventure. They took ownership of Mallow Castle in Mallow, County Cork, Ireland, and operated it as a resort for the rich and famous for almost twenty years. While in Ireland Judy attended University College Cork, receiving a Bachelor's of Arts of English Literature.
Retiring to Skaneateles in 2004, Judy spent the last twenty years as a writer. She wrote for various local publications, and her work appeared in several anthologies. Judy’s first book of short stories, Rising Up on Ordinary Days, was published recently. She lived as an activist for women’s rights, social justice, and the environment.
Judy is predeceased by her husband, Michael McGinn, and five of her siblings.
She is survived by her devoted sons, Brendan McGinn (Kali Planty, significant other), and grandsons, Conor and Michael of Liverpool, and Seamus McGinn (Rowena), currently serving as Petty Officer First Class for the U.S. Navy stationed in Guam. She is also survived by a sister, Barbara Mobley of Skaneateles, numerous close relatives in Joppa, Maryland and Japan.
A Celebration of Life  will be held on Wednesday, August 16th from 12n to 2pm at the Sherwood Inn , West Genesee Street, Skaneateles.
The family requests memorial contributions be made to the National League of American Pen Women in Washington D.C.

To all of the McGinn family - we love you all and we are so saddened to hear of Judy's passing. Having known the McGinn's since they moved to Skaneateles, we have made such great memories that can never be forgotten or replaced.
To Brendan and Seamus; your parents were of the highest caliber of people I have ever known, and you should be so proud of them for the legacy they have left. Love to you all - Taylor, Megan, Ada and Dax Haines

I am so saddened to hear this as just recently learned of Judy’s illness. She was such a delightful person and am so glad our paths crossed. Just ordered her poetry book and was so heartened to learn it was published. My deepest condolences to family and friends. Judy was such a delightful creative person and will be so missed. My thoughts are with all who knew and loved her. With sadness this day as I look forward to reading her book even as it further heartbreaking that she will not be here to share the joy. Again, my deepest sympathies to family and friends. May she rest in peace.

The loss of one of my dearest friends has left a hole in my heart. She was a falling star, alighting in Skaneateles and illuminating her surroundings and friendships with her effervescence and enthusiasm. Her published short stories will endure as a connection to her creative soul. My loving sympathies embrace her sons, grandsons and her remarkable sister and best buddy, Brooke along with her extended family.

May we find comfort in the glow of Judy's bright and friendly smile, her wonderful way of making a presentation, her kindness and warmth. My deep sympathy to her sons, grandsons, her loving, devoted sister, Brooke, other family and close friends, and all those who cherish her memory and their time with Judy. Her loss comes too soon, I know, but she gave her all everyday. She will be missed. She was "some writer," but more importantly, "some person."

That one of my dearest friends is gone is a loss too great to comprehend. We shared so many birthdays together, celebrated so many Christmases and Thanksgivings--and we shared losses too, beginning with Judy's loss of her dear husband. I recall my visit to Mallow Castle, so joyful because we were learning about other phases of each other's lives. Such a generous spirit! I will miss her so much.

I am saddened by Judy's passing. She welcomed me to my first Penwomen meeting with warmth and friendship. I immediatly felt included because of her caring personality. She is one of the reasons that I decided to join the group.

My heartfelt condolences to the family. Judy and my late father worked on his autobiography together for many years and we—my mother, father, and the 5 siblings so enjoyed visits to Mallow Castle in my youth. Judy was a delightful, smart, and lovely woman. I will miss her.

I had the pleasure of meeting Judy at my prior employment with a hearing aid dispenser in Auburn prior to being dismissed. Judy was always pleasant, kind, soft-spoken and a delight to have as a client of the office. Anyone the had the opportunity to know her I am sure would truly agree. As a lover of reading and books, I am definitely going to reach out and pick up Judy’s first book of short stories. I was very blessed to have Judy pass through my life when she did. My thoughts and prayers with her family. Rest in peace, dear angel on wings of whispers words.
