Harold Edward Leonard of Skaneateles and Brookdale Senior Living, passed away peacefully and surrounded by family on Saturday, January 4, 2020 in Syracuse at the age of 91. He was pre-deceased by his wife of 59 years, Mary and his brother Lester. He is survived by his children, Jim (Patty), Amy and Dave (Susan) and grandchildren Elizabeth, Ellie, Katie and Tim.
Harold was born to Walker and Gladys Leonard of Skaneateles, where he lived most of his life. He graduated Skaneateles High School in 1946, earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from the University of Rochester in 1950, and a Master’s degree from Syracuse University.
His introduction to teaching science and technology came during the Korean Conflict when he was selected to be an instructor in the Ground Radar School at Keesler AFB in Biloxi, Mississippi. After the service and a year teaching high school science, he transitioned to college level instruction. He joined the faculty of Cayuga Community College (Auburn Community College) in 1956 and served as a full-time professor for over 40 years.
His hobbies were as wide as his intellectual curiosity. Camping, sailing, gardening, radio-controlled model boats, bird-watching and music were all a vital part of his life. His favorite activity however was fishing, and he loved nothing more than being on the lake catching perch, bass, salmon and especially trout.  He served as a ranger naturalist for the National Parks Service in Glacier National Park for two summers, volunteered for the Boy Scouts, and led family camping expeditions every summer. He was an active member of both the Skaneateles and Auburn Community Bands, and could be found most summer Friday nights in the Gazebo at the end of the lake in the “horn” section. He was particularly proud of giving back to the community, and volunteered regularly at Baltimore Woods, the MOST in Syracuse and for the Skaneateles historical society at the Creamery.
Calling hours will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, January 11th at the Skaneateles Methodist Church, with a memorial service at 2:00 pm. Contributions in lieu of flowers can be made to Baltimore Woods Nature Center.

Jimmy, Amy and David

I am saddened to hear of your father's passing. I always enjoyed working with your parents at church, Habitat for Humanity, Scholarship Committee, and learning from them as seasoned parents, the horrors of raising teenagers! But then, they must have done a great job in that you have become model citizens and something they were very proud of. I wish I could attend Harold's memorial service and be a part of the celebration of his life - I will be out of town. My prayers and thought, remembering the great stories, will be with you on Saturday. Know that your parents are in his presence with peace and joy, looking down on all they have to be proud of.

It was my honor and pleasure to serve on the faculty of Cayuga Community College with Harold Leonard for 30 years. His impact on his students and his fellow faculty was always positive and professional. I remember fondly a conversation he and I had one day as he gave me a ride home because I had car trouble. We began our conversation talking about teaching but somehow managed to transition to talking about fishing on Skaneateles Lake. My condolences to his family and friends on their loss of this wonderful man.

Dear Leonard Family, we are so sorry for your loss at this time of year when most are celebrating. It has been a tough two years, but we hope that the year 2020 will have more joy filled memories than sad. We will be praying for God's comfort as you lay your father to rest. Safe travels and come back soon to hugs from your church family.

Your mom and dad will be greatly missed. Great memories I will always remember. So many wonderful times and various church functions. Your dad always spoke of the time my son needed to boost his grades while attending VMI and your dad was the one who accomplished that. I had shared many special moments with them at their new home and much laughter. Know that I will be keeping each one of you in my daily prayers for warmth and peace. Shalom!

My mother was a 1st cousin to Harold. My mother and Harold's were sisters .As children, we used to love to go to Aunt Gladys' and Harold's home to swim and play. As our home was being build we actually stayed with them. Harold had the most interesting aquarium is his room and my brother and I would watch all the fun things going on in it for hours. The family get togethers at their camp across the lake were amazing and Harold was always up to something fun amazing for all to participate. I was sad to learn of Mary's death earlier last year and am equally saddened to learn of Harold's death.
May he rest in peace.

Harold was my first cousin; his dad, Edward Walker Leonard, and our dad, Raymond, were brothers. We didn't see each other often because I married and lived elsewhere over the years, including many years overseas, but I enjoyed occasional get-togethers with Harold and Mary when visiting my brother John in Auburn. The last time was the summer before Mary passed away. I'm sorry to see them gone, two truly good people, and that I didn't see them more often, and that I never had occasion to meet their children, my first cousins once removed. My daughters, Emily and Cornelia, are second cousins to Jim, Amy, and Dave, and Cornelia's daughter, Ramona, is third cousin to their children. Distance separates the children and Time marches on...

I write this as a nephew and as the oldest son of Harold’s brother, Lester. “Uncle Harold” contributed importantly to my life and, in particular to the endless summers I spent as a child in Skaneateles. It was a time and place of endless enchantment in the 1950s and Uncle Harold was a large part of all of this.

He seemed to know everything about the natural world. In walks down the lane behind the old East Lake house, he told me all you’d ever want to know about teasels, or bird calls. At night it was the constellations – and finding the “Little Dipper.” And there was duck hunting in the blind on the lake on cold winter mornings, and how to handle the .22 at the Skaneateles dump. He taught me how to fish in the in the channel off the mouth of the brook at the West Lake camp. I remember him catching a small catfish and how I started to run tears after watching it flap helplessly in the bottom of the boat and how he just slipped it back into the water without the slightest sign of disappointment in me. Many other stories. Trolling with lures, catching crawfish with bare hands. His aquarium with fish and plants from the lake and the meaning of “phylum” and “cambarus.” All magic.

Later in life, when my son was a child, “Great Uncle” Harold taught him the art of fishing in outings to special places where you caught buckets of them.

Much later, we enjoyed Uncle Harold and Aunt Mary for a week in Colorado where we explored the Garden of the Gods, bristlecone pine groves on Mt Evans, and lakes in Rocky Mountain Natural Park. At 81, he was a strong hiker, even at 10,000 feet.

Surely, Harold Leonard will be missed by the many who had the enjoyment of his companionship and generosity.
