Jerry graduated with a B.S. from Syracuse University in 1965 and Rutgers Law School, J.D. in 1973. He then served as a law clerk on the New Jersey Superior Court Appellate Division.
Jerry was admitted to the NJ Bar in 1973 and the NY Bar in 1981. He was selected as a NJ Super Lawyer annually from 2005 to 2022.
Jerry Hanlon was certified by the Supreme Court of New Jersey as a Criminal Trial Attorney and a Civil Trial Attorney. He is one of very few attorneys who is certified as both. In 1978, Jerry started his own private practice. The firm grew from a solo practice to a well-respected firm, Hanlon Dunn & Robertson, specializing in many aspects of the law. Jerry served in the US Marine Corp Reserve. He was a Lieutenant in the US Army National Guard. He was very active in the community of Harding Township where he served on many volunteer committees.
He was an active member of the Volunteer Fire Department since 1978, and a past president. Jerry enjoyed a well-known reputation for integrity and professionalism. He was known as a “lawyers’ lawyer.” At the end of Jerry’s career, he primarily focused on Ethics Law representing his fellow lawyers.
He is pre-deceased by his mother, Helen “Nan” Hanlon and his beloved canine companion “Baxter".
He is survived by his devoted wife Rosie, his twin sister Nedra Chamberlain (Denny) and sister Debbie Nervina (Peter) and his 2 children Drs. Lara and Matthew Hanlon, son in law Matthew O’Mara, daughter in law Lauren Hanlon and grandchildren Skylar, Sean, Meddy, Sawyer, Archie, Penelope and Finn.
Jerry was known for his passionate love of family, running, Syracuse sports, Otisco Lake, Baltusrol Golf Club and New Vernon Volunteer Fire Department.
Jerry was a father figure and trusted advisor to many and known for being generous beyond measure. He was loved and respected by friends and relatives alike. His presence will be deeply missed.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 2nd at 10am at Robert D. Gray Funeral Home, Skaneateles.
A second service will be held at St. Mary’s Abbey, 230 Mendham Rd, Morristown NJ on July 23, 2022 at 12 PM.
