Picture
Mary Ann Baner passed away peacefully the second Friday in May at the age of 87 in her home leaving behind a legacy of four children (Virginia Baner, Larry Baner, Carl Baner and Mary Alley), nine grandchildren (Caitlin Baner, John Carl Baner, Lukas Baner, Megan Bohabot, Joshua Alley, Debra Baner, Phebe Alley, Selina Baner, John Philip Alley), three foster children (Frank Jones, John Trowse and Sherrii McCombie) and her beloved pets Lacy (dog) and Bandit (donkey).
She is preceded in death by the love of her life Larry Baner husband of 48 years, and John Trowse. Her life’s moto could be summarized as “You can’t change your situation but you can change your attitude” which was passed onto her family and all those she came in contact with.
You could tell Mary Ann was a lifelong Christian by her love for others. That love for others spilled out into her career as a teacher, through mentoring and by helping others. She is probably most widely known for her passion and love for chemistry.
She graduated from Dickenson College with a BS in chemistry in the 1950’s when women were not considered fit for learning chemistry and went on to earn a MS in education from Syracuse University. She taught thirty-seven years of high school chemistry in Marcellus, Westhill, Syracuse, South Carolina and Pennsylvania school districts. Students in her classrooms will never forget her high expectations for their classroom performance, Avagodro’s Number and her reaction chemistry demonstrations that went bang.
Outside the classroom she tutored numerous chemistry students, was active in the American Chemical Society Syracuse educational chapter, mentored New York state chemistry teachers and was an adjunct lecturer in adolescence science at Cortland. Teaching did not stop in the classroom as she taught learn to swim at the Jordan Memorial Pool for many years, taught Sunday school at Jordan United Methodist Church, coached science Olympiad teams for her daughter and grandchildren and co-led the Jordan Girl Scout troop.
In her free time Mary Ann enjoyed music of all kinds but especially that of the Syracuse Symphoria, nature (Baltimore woods), swimming, gardening and her hobby farm with a menagerie of animals who all had names (sheep, horses, pigs, cows, ducks, dogs, cats and a donkey).
In lieu of flowers the family asks that people consider donations in her name to one or two of her favorite volunteer passions: the Jordan Memorial Pool (Veterans Memorial Pool, P.O. Box 561, Jordan, NY 13080) and the Baltimore Woods Nature Center (www.baltimorewoods.org  4007 Bishop Hill Road, Marcellus, NY  13108-0133).
Mary Ann chose to donate her body to Upstate Medical Center and will continue to teach even in death. A celebration of life memorial service followed by a reception will be held at the Jordan United Methodist Church, Jordan NY on July 30, 2022 at 10:30 AM followed by a reception at the church.

Dear Baner Family,
I will always remember the chemistry classes with Mrs Baner.
She and Mr. Fetterman always had something going in the store room between their classrooms. He would come to the store room door and make faces at her while she was teaching. Some times she would lose it and tell him to go away. Then a few days later she would do the same thing in reverse.
I also would see her at 4-H activities on many occasions over the years.
May GOD, who calls our dear ones home, be ever close to you, may he enfold you with his love and send you comfort too.
WITH SYMPATHY

I absolutely loved Mrs. Baner. If anyone could make chemistry interesting, it was her. She was one of my favorite teachers. God gained a beautiful Angel.

Mrs. Baner was an amazing teacher and an even better person. I gained all of my love for chemistry from her. It carried on in college with biology and chemistry and ultimately to becoming a dentist. I owe her a great deal of gratitude. My condolences to her family. Heaven gained a true angel.

I am so sorry that we have lost Mrs. Baner. She has been a tremendous force for good throughout her life and was loved by all. She will be missed! Our sons enjoyed her passion for teaching and recall many humorous stories about antics in her classroom. She expected the very best from them, and I know they didn't always appreciate that as teenagers.

Everyone who has known her is better because of her influence. May you all find great peace and comfort in your great memories of time spent together. God Bless!

Ginny, Larry, Carl and Mary,
I am so sorry to hear of your Mother's passing. I have so many fond memories of your Mother and the fun we had together during your years on Gordon Parkway and of course, your Mom and my Mom as Girl Scout leaders. Both your parents were wonderful people and both will be missed by many, I hope your happy memories sustain you all and your families during this difficult time. I will keep your Mom, you and your families in my thoughts and prayers.

Sheila

So sorry to hear this news, but what a treat to see Mary Ann’s smile again. We were neighbors on Chamberlain Road. Your mom was amazing. Got me into teaching swim lessons at the pool where I discovered how much I loved teaching. I learned to ride horses on sweet, patient Sheldon. Your mom tutored me in Chemistry (a feat in and of itself!). My first car was a Saab and as soon as I sat in it I instantly had memories of riding with Mary Ann to the Jordan pool on chilly summer mornings. Saab’s have such a distinct scent that I completely associated with Mary Ann! She’d task my little brother and I with helping in the garden if she and Larry were traveling. Got to visit the sheep and little lambs. I loved seeing Mary Ann take in the little runt lamb who became the “house lamb”. Her gingerbread men that would mysteriously appear on the front steps were just delicious! Wow such great memories…she (they!) added so much to my childhood. Special humans indeed. I’ll be sure to try to keep the ripples of goodness going as long as I can. Hugs.

There are very few teachers for whom you cry when you hear of their passing. I can't imagine the pain felt by you, her family. The world would be a better place with more people like her. My sincere condolences.

Dear Baner family:
I remember your mother with great affection. She was my High School chemistry teacher (Westhill, class of 1964). She was always smiling, and I still use some chemistry symbols in mt shorthand. You have a wonderful legacy. Please accept my heart-felt condolences.

I, Donald A Weeks was one of Mary Ann Baner's Chemistry students during the September 1981 to June 1982 academic year at Marcellus Senior High School when I was in 11th grade at that high school. Anyway she seemed to enjoy advising the Student Government members after school while I was trying to finish Chemistry Labs assignments. Anyway condolences to her family for their loss and may Mrs Baner rest in peace.

Dear Baner Family,
Mrs. Baner inspired so many students to appreciate chemistry and become scientists. She was an amazing teacher. I became a scientist with her encouragement and gave a lecture at the the high school about 10 years after I graduated, it was a joy to see her again and to talk with her like an old friend. She told me about the joy of her farm and especially lambs! Praying peace and comfort to all her family and friends. She is home with her Savior, blessings, Linda

I taught with Mary Ann at Marcellus High School. I had great respect for her as a teacher and a human being. I learned so much from her. In recent years I was so happy to see her several days a week swimming at the Auburn Y. I was always amazed at all the things she was still doing for the community. It seemed she was always baking pies for some fundraiser. Sending love to all her family, her incredible energy will surely be with you forever.

I was a student in Ma Baner's class at Marcellus in 1981. She was an awesome teacher! I believe I passed the class, but I always remember her when discussing "esters" Thank you Ma Baner for your wisdom, understanding, and patience. Bob Burns MCS 1982

Dear sweet Mrs Baner pulled me aside one day as I was leaving class...she said I know you're enjoying this class BUT you're not very good at it. She says to me, she's having the SAME class after school SLOWER and I would pass the regents if I put in the time. I nearly have tears in my eyes typing this, she did the same lesson slower and with special attention and sonofagun, I DID pass the regents. Thank you Mrs Baner.

Please accept my heartfelt condolences. I was sad to hear about Mrs. Banner passing. I felt Mrs. Banner was one of my favorite teachers at MCS High School. I have fond memories of her throwing an eraser every now and then at students who were not quite attending and of her being an excited atom one day as she jumped up and down on the top of the lab desks. What a wonderful teacher with high expectations and a friendly smile. May she rest in peace.

Sincere condolences to the Baner family from Sue Chamberlin's granddaughters. We will always remember the kindness your family showed to our grandmother after buying her home. You made her feel like she was a part of your family. We also will never forget your parents' incredible kindness in opening your home to us after both our father's and grandmother's deaths, and your mom giving each of our children Indian head arrows. Your parents were special people and we will always think of your family fondly.

How many testimonies do you need to read before you can contact the spiritualist to help you with the problem you are facing that makes life look choked and undeserving? Are you passing through pregnancy problems? Or maybe you want to get back your ex lover or get a big promotion in your office? I only needed to see Dr ANOKOKUDO to help me with my pregnancy problems and my help came to me.
