Marian Berry Loftus passed away April 4 having just celebrated her 98th birthday with her family 10 days before.
Born and raised in St. Louis, she was the eldest of 7 children.  Her life took a turn when her mother died when Marian was a teenager and she became the “mother” of her younger siblings.  She attended the Rosati-Kain High School in St. Louis, where she graduated top of her class.
Marian met her husband, David, in St. Louis where he was attending the St. Louis University School of Dentistry.  After David graduated, they married, spent a few years in Brooklyn while David finished service in the United States Navy, and then moved to Skaneateles where they spent their entire lives.
Marian’s greatest joy was raising her family of 10 children.  The low point of her life was losing her daughter Elizabeth (Betsy) in a boating accident in 1966.
Despite a busy home life, she made several significant contributions to the Skaneateles community.  Working with a few of her good friends, she helped start the first nursery school in Skaneateles which still exists today.  She was also a founding member of the Skaneateles Vincent House Guild.  Her faith was very important to her and she was a life-long communicant at St. Mary’s of the Lake Roman Catholic Church in Skaneateles.  As part of her religious duty, she served many terms as president of the Stella Maris Retreat Guild.  For many years, she also made dinners for the men at Unity Acres in Orwell, NY, and worked annually as a captain of a team going door to door to collect money for the American Cancer Society.
Marian was predeceased by her husband, David; daughter, Elizabeth, and five of her siblings.   She is survived by her children David Loftus Jr. (Jane), Pamela Pidhirny (John), Jo Ann Loftus, Mary Ann Loftus, Margaret Newland (Fergus), Jon Loftus, M.D. (Tayloe), Philip Loftus, Amy Kimm (Todd), Mark Loftus (Linh) and sister, Pat Berry.    She also has 14 grandchildren, six great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held Saturday, April 9 at St. Mary of the Lake Church in Skaneateles at 10am. With private burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
For much of her life, Marian asked her family to make contributions to the many charities she supported instead of giving her gifts.
Please help continue this tradition and in lieu of flowers, make a donation to SAVES in Skaneateles, Doctors Without Borders (can be made online), or a charity of your choice.

Amy, losing a loved one is hard, especially one who seemed to be so loved and well regarded. I didn't know your mom, but I'm sure she was a terrific lady. I can't wait till your back in school so I can hear some heartwarming and/or funny stories about her.

The world has a less of a shine without Marian in it. She was so full of life, with such a great sense of humor. I wish I could of seen more of her throughout the years. Living in different states made it difficult. But I will cherish the memories I did have with her and the Loftus family over the years. I don't ever recall her not smiling. She was such a joy to be around. Rest in peace, and when you get together with all of your other siblings, try to talk one at a time. Even God has his limits. :) Love you.

I miss calling her on the phone and she would answer Oh Hello Dollie! Everyone was Dollie, loved that! She was the sweetest lady and was also my God Mother. Boy was I lucky for that! She never missed a Birthday or Christmas. I would tell her, you have a ton of others to buy for, please don't send me anything, but she always did. I agree with Matt, sure wish we could have seen more of her. I did always write her letters, she just loved getting them. It was kind of like writing in a diary, I would fill her in on everything that was going on in St. Louis. I keep picturing Marian joining all the others in Heaven, what a reunion. Thinking of all of you.

Dear Loftus family. If I were closer I'd attend the celebration of life for such a wonderful woman. Your parents & you all are always in my thoughts in April as I remember Betsy. Many fond memories of your family. Your mom will be warmly welcomed by the loves ones she lost. She lived a good long life but I know you will still miss her daily. Condolences to you all.

Your lovely mother was such a dear friend of our mother, Mary Kate Shane, who departed to Heaven just days before Marian. We sent our condolences! This is certainly the end of an era in Skaneateles! We will miss her warm smile.

Dearest Marian, I am so sorry that you are gone, but God knows that you have earned your spot in Heaven. I know the Lord was there with open arms to greet you, along with the rest of the family. You are probably having one good time without me! Some day I will be able to join you, I hope soon. :) You leave behind an incredible legacy. Your kids are wonderful, every one of them. Now you can enjoy your husband Dave. Hope to see you soon. Love your sister Pat.

Marianne was a beautiful person, and remains in the small handful of people who had a powerful impact on my life. I thought of her almost as my second mother. She was kind, nurturing and compassionate and in my mind I had her somewhere near sainthood. I am so sorry for your family's loss, but please know she made the world a much better place.
