Margueritte Craig Pendergast Stevens of Skaneateles, NY, and Kennebunkport, ME peacefully left this world on April 22, 2018. She was born on October 19, 1921 in Beaver, PA to Earle McKee Craig and Margaret Peters Craig. She lived her early years in the Beaver area, outside of Pittsburgh, PA. As a child, she enjoyed riding horses and attending summer camp at Crescent Lake, Maine with her younger brother, Earle McKee Craig, Jr. At age 15, Margueritte attended boarding school at the Baldwin School in Bryn Mawr, PA, graduating in 1940. Following high school graduation, she attended Vassar College. On July 1, 1950, Margueritte married Marshall Abbott Pendergast, a Valley Forge Military Academy grad and fellow Pennsylvania native, and they moved to Kennebunkport, Maine. The couple raised their children and lived in Kennebunkport until Abbott's passing in 1982.
In 1990, she married Philip Holbrook Stevens and moved to his home in Skaneateles, NY while always keeping a second home in Maine. After moving to Skaneateles, Margueritte became a member of Grace Chapel and has a large and loving church family. Her Christian faith sustained her throughout her life; one of her favorite Bible passages is Psalm 51. Margueritte and Philip traveled extensively throughout the United States, Canada and Europe until their health prevented them from doing so and Philip died in 2013.
Margueritte is predeceased by her mother, father, husbands M. Abbott Pendergast and Philip H. Stevens, brother Earle, daughter Margueritte Elizabeth (aka. Marny/Heather) Sherwood (Wayne) and stepdaughter Alison Stevens-Macy (John).
She is survived by her children, Craig Abbott Pendergast and Margaret Anne Pendergast; stepson, Andrew M. Stevens (Angela); grandchildren, Ashley Pendergast (Stephen Best), Morgan Baker (Christopher), Sally Western and Cyrus Western, and Erica Stevens, five great-grandchildren and a sixth great-grandchild is due any day, several nieces, a nephew, cousins and many extended family and friends.
A celebration of Margueritte's life will be held at Grace Chapel, 1674 Route 20, Skaneateles, NY at 4:00 PM on Sunday, April 29, 2018.
