Comedian and activist Barry Crimmins of Skaneateles, NY passed away on February 28, 2018. He was born in Kingston, NY on July 3, 1953. Barry is preceded in death by his father Phillip Crimmins. Much loved, Barry is survived by his wife Helen Crimmins (nee Lysen), his mother Margaret Hooe, three sisters, several nieces and nephews, and countless friends. He was raised in Skaneateles, NY. A popular student with many lifelong friends, Barry was proud to have played football and baseball for Skaneateles Central High (class of 1971).
A scathing political satirist, Barry was one of the founding fathers of the exploding Boston comedy scene of the 70’s and 80’s. He ran the city’s first full time comedy club out of a Chinese restaurant in Cambridge called The Ding Ho helping to launch the careers of Steven Wright, Lenny Clarke, Kevin Meaney, Jack Gallagher, Tom Kenny, Bobcat Goldthwait, and many others. He also encouraged and influenced comedians such as David Cross, Patton Oswalt, and Margaret Cho. Respected for his blistering takedown of hypocrisy, Barry opened for musical acts such as Jackson Browne, Billy Bragg, and Bill Morrissey. His fans ranged from Kurt Vonnegut, Bill Hicks, Noam Chomsky to Jerry Lewis.
In 1993, Barry proudly accepted the Courage of Conscience Award from Howard Zinn on behalf of the Peace Abbey. As an abuse survivor, he was an outspoken advocate for those who needed a voice. In 1995, Barry testified before a Senate Judiciary Committee where he took AOL to task for their lax policies on child pornography trading and profiteering on their service which led to them changing their policies.
Barry wrote for The Boston Phoenix and authored the book “Never Shake Hands With a War Criminal”. His comedy album “Kill the Messenger” was loved by many and was a critical success. As a national headliner, Barry appeared on several TV shows including “Conan”, “HBO’s Young Comedians Special”, and “Evening at the Improv”. As a television writer, he wrote for “The Dennis Miller Show” and “The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour”.
In 2015, Barry was the subject of Bobcat Goldthwait’s award winning documentary entitled “Call Me Lucky” where he recounted his life in comedy, activism, and victory over personal struggles. Later that year he became a member of The Friars Club. In 2016, he released his first comedy special “Whatever Threatens You”. An album of the same name was released in 2017.
Dear friend and comedian Robin Ince stated that “Barry was a warrior for compassion and fairness.” Writer/director/producer Judd Apatow said, “Barry touched so many lives. He gave so much of himself to help other people. I hope his life inspires others to follow his example. And he was hilarious.” Barry religiously tweeted at the pope to demand excommunication from the Catholic Church. When asked why, he replied “You gotta have a hobby.” Barry loved laughing with his wife and friends, music, dogs, and the Yankees.
A memorial ceremony for family and friends will be held at the Lodge at Welch Allyn (4355 State Street Road Skaneateles Falls, NY 13153) on March 17 at 8 p.m. to midnight. In lieu of flowers, please donate to www.gofundme.com/helenlysen

Such a remarkable man. I'll call you lucky to have had him; and I'm so very sorry you are hurting now. In time the luck and the laughter will reassert themselves over the pain. This has been my experience. Do take care of yourselves and each other.

Barry was always right on top of things and somehow was able to capture and ridicule the hypocrisy and betrayal so prevalent in our society. His heart was definitely and decidedly in the right place and on the side of the oppressed. He performed for mass audiences and small groups, where ever he was he advocated for humanity and peace and it was especially nice for me to hear it from him one on one. I was privileged that way and I will strive to always honor that as time goes on and to remember to be a little bolder, a little more confident and a little angrier when the times call for it, which is far too often. I will remind myself and others that Barry Crimmins inspired that in me.

I was with Barry in the 80's while he was starting Boston Comedy. Because of Barry, I met so many great comedians that became great friends. Barry has always helped "the little Guy" and his priority in life was justice for everyone..He loved animals, nature and worried about the environment . He was there for me and my kids, and taught my children kindness and many things which have made them them such wonderful, caring adults today. I feel so privileged to have known him and have always followed his politics. I am so glad he had some great friends to make him laugh at the end of his life. It makes me feel so good that his wife Helen and Bob were with him at the end. My heart goes out to his wife Helen, his mom, sisters and all his friends.

Our deepest sympathy goes to the family. We hope you will find much comfort from the words of John 5:28, 29 which speaks about the restoring of life to all those in the "memorial tombs". Also Revelation 21:1-5--no more pain or death. We know the scripture is referring to the earth because there has never been death in heaven.

Barry was an amazing person and I'm grateful to have know him. He was involved in my life during my formative years and taught me about civic responsibility and social consciousness. He may be gone from this Earth but aspects of his life lives on through what he's taught me and through what he's taught and shared with others. I miss him.

My heart goes out to Barry's wife, family and friends. During my formative years, I lived under the same roof as Barry. My house was known as the house with "the peace sign." I grew up with notes on my microwave that read, "eat sooner, die quicker." Posted on my fridge was how in one week the amount of money the US spends on nuclear weapons the government could feed the nation many times over. Barry shaped my beliefs on the environment, politics and much more. His acts of altruism taught me more than I could express. I did not grow up in a "typical" household; however, I would not change my upbringing for the world. I will be forever grateful for all he taught me. The world will not be the same without him. Barry, please say "hello" to John B, and Andy C; two other amazing people who left us too early. Rest in Peace and thank you.

I had the experience of living under the same roof with Barry for over ten years during my adolescent years. Thanks to his influence my political views have been about caring for others. He has influenced my career in helping children who need assistance in overcoming their past. He will be missed. My heart goes out to all who loved him.

True God the source of life promised through his word the bible at John 5:28-29 ..that those in the memorial tombs will hear His voice and there will be resurrection for the dead. Because His original plan for mankind is to live forever in paradise in earth.

I TESTED POSITIVE FOR HSV-2 A FEW MONTHS AGO.
At first, Yes, I was devastated thinking I have an incurable STD for life. After doing hours of research I quickly realized genital herpes is a filthy parasite that just likes to hide in your body. Yes, There’s no “medical cure” but that doesn’t mean your body can’t get rid of it. I literally flush it out of my system with the help of Doctor Azuka, A natural herbal medicine which I ordered after doing some research. And now I’m HSV-2 negative, I never believed it until my doctor finally gave me the test results and behold I was HSV-2 free. I’m so glad that I found you, Doctor Azuka. Thanks so much for your goodness I’m grateful. You can also get your help from him through his

My ex-husband and I had always managed to stay friendly after our divorce in February 2017. But I always wanted to get back together with him, All it took was a visit to this spell casters website last December, because my dream was to start a new year with my husband, and live happily with him.. This spell caster requested a specific love spell for me and my husband, and I accepted it. And this powerful spell caster began to work his magic. And 48 hours after this spell caster worked for me, my husband called me back for us to be together again, and he was remorseful for all his wrong deeds. My spell is working because guess what: My “husband” is back and we are making preparations on how to go to court and withdraw our divorce papers ASAP. This is nothing short of a miracle. Thank you Dr Emu for your powerful spells. Words are not enough.
